This weekend marks the last hurrah of the Cardinal Bar, an institution in Madison: http://www.madison.com/tct/top5/457099

I remember dancing regularly at the Cardinal with [info]tcsumner  and [info]reardp  back in the day (I won't list the year, but we regularly heard Depeche Mode and M. C. Hammer on the dance floor, and it wasn't retro night). My husband and [info]whymc  used to hang out there on fetish night, where they sometimes encountered my brother (whose wedding reception was actually held there, on a Saturday afternoon, before the place opened).

They have been struggling for years, so with the current economy, I'm not surprised, but I am saddened.  There will undoubtedly be several more night spots closing this year.  The New York Times ran a "36 Hours in Madison, WI" article in their travel section today.  The online edition ran the following correction: "The 36 Hours column on Page 8 this weekend, about Madison, Wis., includes outdated information about Café Montmartre. After the section went to press, the cafe closed."

Current Mood:
disappointed disappointed

Sniff. Moaning and holding head. So sad. The Cardinal was the place my best friend and I always went back to to have "still got it" nights of dancing and flirting fun even after the years of visiting it as college students. A dance floor full of the glee of letting go and being friendly with anyone you please. Sniff.

Sadness. I loved that quirky little dive of a bar.
